To exclude extreme values (to allow less extreme values to be more easily distinguished), reduce the percentile; to include more extreme values, increase the percentile. The main variable ‘Capacity Factor’ uses fixed extremes so changes here are irrelevant.

Notes and Source

Quick Start

The initial view is regional bubbles and global crosses. The bubbles include both country groupings and the countries who generate the most total electricity (but not all available countries).

Generation share is the main variable along the horizontal axis, meaning the share of regional total generation of the category on the vertical axis.

Bubble colour is 5-year absolute change in generation share (green up, red down), bubble size is absolute generation (in terawatt-hours). Either of these variables can also be selected as the main variable.

Hover over a point to see its details (or select on a touch screen).

Zoom charts with horizontal axes by dragging horizontally on the chart pane (or separate two fingers on touch screens). On desktop, pan left and right when zoomed in using the shift key.

Configure main variable, categories, chart type (which also include share, time series and map) and display options from the menu, top right.

Change year and select a region using controls below the chart.

Category Definitions

Some categories are described well by just their name but the source adds the following notes:

Solar includes both solar thermal and solar photovoltaic (PV) generation, and where possible distributed solar generation is included.

Where possible, Hydro generation excludes any contribution from pumped hydro generation (leaving standard hydroelectricity).

Bioenergy is classified as renewable, but caveats are attached. See the source for the details.

Other Renewables generation includes geothermal, tidal and wave generation.

Other Fossil generation includes generation from oil and petroleum products, as well as manufactured gases and waste.
