Notes and Source

Quick Start

The initial view is country bubbles and global crosses. Only countries contributing >0.5% of total global emissions are shown (not all available countries).

Emissions share is the main variable along the horizontal axis, meaning the share of regional total anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions from the category – initially an emissions sector – on the vertical axis.

Emissions can be negative in the land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF) sector, hence the concept of a negative share is used. Shares still sum to 100% but positive emissions sum to more than 100% if there are negative emissions. There is an alternative explorer that excludes LULUCF.

Bubble colour is 5-year absolute change in emissions share (green up, red down), bubble size is absolute emissions (megatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent). Either of these variables can also be selected as the main variable.

Hover over a point to see its details (or select on a touch screen).

Zoom charts with horizontal axes by dragging horizontally on the chart pane (or separate two fingers on touch screens). On desktop, pan left and right when zoomed in using the shift key.

Configure main variable (including which greenhouse gases to include), categories, chart type (which also include share, time series and map) and display options from the menu, top right.

Category Definitions

Sector categories are summarised by the sources as follows:

Power – power and heat generation plants (public & autoproducers).

Fuel Exploitation – production, transformation and refining of fuels.

Ind. Combustion – combustion for industrial manufacturing.

Ind. Processes – industrial processes e.g. emissions from the production of cement, iron and steel, aluminum, chemicals, solvents, etc.

Transport – mobile combustion (road & rail & ship & aviation).

Agriculture – agricultural soils, crop residues burning, enteric fermentation, manure management, indirect nitrous oxide emissions from agriculture.

LULUCF – carbon dioxide from land use, land use change and forestry – deforestation, afforestation, logging and forest degradation, shifting cultivation, regrowth of forests and peat burning and drainage.

Buildings – small scale non-industrial stationary combustion.

Waste – solid waste disposal and waste water treatment.

Two groupings of the above categories are also available:

Energy Supply – combines Power and Fuel Exploitation.

Industry – combines Ind. Combustion and Ind. Processes.

Carbon dioxide (excluding biomass/biofuel combustion), nitrous oxide, methane and certain fluorinated gases (shown as f-gases), are the greenhouse gases included.

Emissions of different gases are aggregated and displayed using 100-year Global Warming Potential (GWP) values from the fifth assessment report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This is the method used by the source, though it makes the GWP values slightly dated (AR6 values exist). However, the difference is often minor – a 0.3 Gt (~0.5%) difference on the global total is suggested by the UN’s Emission Gap Report 2024; the uncertainty ranges on the total are more than an order of magnitude greater than this. Some smaller countries do not have any LULUCF data but are included anyway.

There is an alternative explorer that excludes LULUCF.

Note that cement sucks up carbon dioxide over time; this cement carbonation sink is not currently included.

The data come from merging two data sets on a global and, where possible, also a country level. Only countries that appear identically in both data sets are given LULUCF data, otherwise only the non-LULUCF data are used.

Non-LULUCF emissions were taken from:

EDGAR (Emissions Database for Global Atmospheric Research) Community GHG Database, a collaboration between the European Commission, Joint Research Centre (JRC), the International Energy Agency (IEA), and comprising IEA-EDGAR CO₂, EDGAR CH₄, EDGAR N₂O, EDGAR F-GASES version EDGAR_2024_GHG (2024) European Commission, JRC (Datasets). EDGAR – The Emissions Database for Global Atmospheric Research (europa.eu).

CO2-only LULUCF emissions were taken from data supplied in association with:

Following the method described in this document (see section 2.2), LULUCF estimates are constructed using the average of three bookkeeping approaches (together with the average of three data sets on peat drainage and fires).
